For Honor: To Buy Or Not To Buy

I have been following a game called “For Honor” for a very long time now, I’d say about almost 2 years. I wrote an article on it back in August of 2016 explaining how the game works, what it is all about and why I am so excited to get my hands on the game (you can check that out here) and I was finally able to in September when I was selected for the Alpha Testing. I didn’t get a chance to talk about it because of my responsibilities running the MLD, but it did make an impact on me and now I don’t know whether to buy it or not.

Overwatch: Our Experience

After the dust has settled and the gaming world knows much more about Blizzard’s new offering; Overwatch, it is time naturally to delve into our deepest, darkest thoughts and offer some opinions based on our experiences. But we are not going at it alone as TheGamingBear and HalfShelledHero have decided to team up and bring you lucky readers a discussion based write up on our impressions over the recent beta.

My Experience: The Division Beta

So I was fortunate enough to receive access to The Division Beta over the weekend BUT I got it early Sunday morning and after taking about 3-4 hours to download and install I had the chance to play it for a quarter of the day. But in that time I got a good look at what this game would be all about and sadly I was put off by it and here is why.

tom-clancys-the-division-player-stories-us.pngI have been tracking this game for quite some time, growing with anticipation and aggravation after every delay on the release date. So I was pretty excited when I got the email and the redeemable code. I watched the very appealing opening and got caught up on the story that the game is revolved around. The environment in the game is very good, everything seems realistic and on point. There was a moment I was trading shots with a bunch of thugs in a snowstorm (or what seemed to be one), I could barley make out where anyone was as the wind and snow limited my sight. Ducking down behind cover and trying to make your way close enough to take someone out was a bit of fun in itself. In the only mission you can play, you make your way through Madison Square Garden and that was my favorite moment of me entire experience.

Tom_Clancy's_The_Division_gameplay_screenshot.jpgWhat turned me off about the game was the idea that I could shoot a “bad guy” a million times in the face (exaggeration) but not kill him as fast as I would of needed or liked because the stats on my weapon was not good. But yeah I get it, kill and loot, build your character up, I get that. But unlike playing Diablo, I just didn’t like how it was set up that way. In my limited time with the game I wasn’t able to earn enough money to upgrade my gear through the vendors and the goons I did kill barely dropped anything of use. I get that it is a MMO and it is certainly geared towards that, I just wasn’t pulled into the game like I had hoped.

tom-clancy-division-nypd.jpgMaybe I was expecting a different feel from the game, or maybe I just didn’t have enough time with it but after finishing that one mission and then running through empty streets randomly coming across an enemy or two that look and react pretty much the same way I got bored. Especially when 95% of the time you NEED to duck for cover in every single encounter you have or you WILL die. Meanwhile your enemies can literally make their way right up to you with a bat and crack you on the head after you shot them about 5 times.

I am not saying this is a bad game, it does have a place in a lot of gamers collections. I just didn’t have FUN at all and I don’t want to make the same mistake I made with Evolve and quickly regret making the purchase. The Division was on my radar for quite some time but I have officially written it off, I will pick up Mighty No.9 (barring another damn delay), & UFC 2. I also have my eyes on Overwatch but I want to see more before I pull the trigger.

Did any of you get to play the beta? What did you think?

My Experience: UFC 2 Beta

So I was lucky enough to get the chance to try out the Beta for UFC 2 from EA Sports. A lot of people complain about EA but they have really taken UFC gaming to a good place. I have dabbled in UFC games for a long time, from the few I picked up from THQ  and the past 2 games from EA. I thought EA did a good job in its first game of bringing a better look and feel to the UFC game than THQ ever did, and they have taken it a little further this time around.

I like to brawl in these games, I will LIVE or DIE by the stand up game so I have ALWAYS hated the clinch system. This year they changed it up and it was surprisingly simple to use. Simply hold the R stick in the direction of the action you want to do and it will do it as long as you are not hit or countered. out of my 15 fights, I only lost 1 in the clinch system and I believe it was bugged because I could not block at all. Other than that I was able to fight my way back to my feet (after taken some damage of course) and continued the fight.

CM Punk.jpgThrowing combos and knocking someone out has never looked or felt so good. Even when I get knocked out I’ll yell out “damn!” or “Oh !@#$” because you can hear it, and almost feel it when it happens. During this one fight my opponent ended the match with at least a 6-8 punch combo, it was beautiful and I couldn’t stop it. Before I knew it, it was over. It was the best beaten I took my entire time playing.

So I kept count of my W/L record (vs other beta testers) and I went 3-11 (I didn’t count the one that was bugged). Yeah, I have learned that I am not very good at the game haha. That being said, I had a blast! I played my first 6 fights as CM Punk and went 0-6, I was knocked out 5 times and had one split decision loss (which I thought I had won). I then took Rory MacDonald as my fighter and got my first W with a Superman punch KO in the

very first round. I though to myself, “this is it, it was Punk, I am going on a winning streak!”. I lost my next fight to drop to 1-7 haha, but it was close! One of us were going to be knocked out and I so happened to take the right shot to the face. I then bounced back with a 1st round KO, and then lost in a blood bath! I then capped it off with 1 more win and a couple losses before I came to the conclusion that EA did a very good job with this game.

Now what has me on the fence is that I am not very good at the game and losing all the time at some point will not make me want to play, BUT if I preorder I get to play as MIKE !@#$ing TYSON! so how could I lose?! If I spend more time with the game after release I am sure I will get better at it, and thus have more fun but for me personally, is it something worth spending my money on? I don’t know, I think Iron Mike might make me buy this game haha.
