Yesterday was my 60th day of HalfShelledHero Gaming and on that day I went over 1,000 views and 100 likes on WordPress.com. I know it is not a lot but for once in my life I am not focused on the “numbers”, as I am just enjoying the journey that I am on right now. Even though the numbers are not staggering by any means, it got me thinking about how I got to this point and how excited I am for the future I believe is in front of me. I wanted to share a little bit with you about how I got to where I am today so I hope you enjoy the ride!
I was born in the late 80’s and from the get-go I was in LOVE with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! My life has always included the turtles in one way or another. I remember playing the TMNT game for the NES when I was still really young, but my favorite TMNT game of ALL-TIME was Turtles in Time on the SNES, I must of beat that game a million times! I have Leonardo tattooed on my arm, TMNT PoP Figures on my wall, memorabilia for days, seen every movie and every cartoon, but the point here is TMNT and Video Games are two of my first loves in life.
Fast forward to after High School, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life. I ended up bouncing from one dead end job to another, life was pretty crappy. I decided to head back to school and received a Business Degree (that has yet to prove its worth) but still… It wasn’t what I wanted to do. It wasn’t until towards the end of College and thereafter where I realized that I really enjoyed three hobbies, video games, writing and graphic design. Looking back now, I don’t know how I didn’t come to this conclusion sooner. I LOVE to create and have been my entire life! I could go on about all the projects I have done over my life but I will save that for another day.
So with my new found direction in life figured out I started a “Entertainment” website where myself and a friend covered just about everything from Sports, to Video Games, to Movies, TV Shows and so on. It was called “On My Radar Entertainment” and I did everything from writing blogs to creating the logo’s and banners, wallpapers, video graphic, video editing, I mean we went all out. The problem was, I was putting in so much work and effort that I started to become frustrated with how little support and numbers we had.
Luckily with the help of my friend and my work on “On My Radar” I got a contributor spot for “WhatCulture.com” and I was pretty excited. I wrote 2 articles for them that tallied 248 thousand views, received tons of compliments and people were finally engaged in my work. Compare that to the 2 or 3 views a day with 0 comments and 0 likes doing “On My Radar”, you could say I was thrilled. However, those 2 articles would be my last. I quickly learned that I could not just write whatever I wanted, I had to choose from a list they had available and it was first come first serve and to be honest I felt their ideas sucked. That’s not me being sour that’s me being 100% honest, and I hated their template. Everything HAD to be in a list, Top 5, Top 10, Top 20, I hate those types of articles (you can see why I always say “this is not a list of who or what is better”). I left the position very soon after and went back to work on “On My Radar Entertainment” which I soon let die because What Culture pretty much sucked the life out of my joy of writing.
From there I started my own Graphic Design Brand (Wayman Designs) and I began creating for others. I designed logos for local companies around my area, I created some T-Shirt Brands, and really fell in love with my work as a Designer. Then the biggest thing to rock my world since Diablo 3 was released, Rocket League hooked me from the very beginning. I fell in love with Rocket League and I wanted to learn more about it, talk more about it and amerce myself in the world of Rocket League, so I got the band back together and started “On My Radar Entertainment” back up again.
We tried for a couple months but it was the same story all over again, lots of work, no reward. We kept pushing through but it again became stagnate, however I got another opportunity to write for another website! Sportster.com I believe was the name and while I didn’t 100% want to write sports, I thought it may be a good opportunity. Going in to my first article, once again I had to choose from a list, as a matter of fact, almost everything about the Sportster was basically a knockoff of WhatCulture.com. But back to my point, they didn’t really talk about sports… instead of “Top 10 Running Backs in the NFL Who Were Traded Before They Were Big” it was something like “Top 10 Running Backs in the NLF Who Have Aids”… Almost every single thing on their list was about, Players cheating, or Child Support, Diseases, and so on. That’s not what I wanted to write about so I left them as well before I wrote even one article.
Then it hit me! Everything I was doing was so broad, and with or under other people. Why don’t I do something on my own, fully. No pressure, don’t watch the numbers, just write about what you are passionate about. I thought, “Why not do a Rocket League blog?”. Brilliant!! My PS4 name is HalfShelledHero so Ill name the blog “HalfShelledHero Gaming!”. My first 5 articles were all about Rocket League and that was great, but I really wanted to talk about the other games I was passionate about… Like Diablo! What was meant to be a Rocket League only blog has turned into a place where I come to talk about everything I am thinking about in the world of gaming. Whether it be my thoughts on upcoming or newly released games, Heroes of the Storm, Diablo, or my very own Rocket League… League, the Minor League Doubles.
I feel in 2 months HalfShelledHero Gaming has turned into a solid growing extension of who I am and where I want to be. 1,000 views and 100 likes may be peanuts to 248k views and many of the other popular bloggers out there but I am enjoying myself 248 thousand times more than I was at any other point in my writing career. To those that have joined me along the way, I appreciate you and your support!
I hope to grow HalfShelledHero Gaming into one of the top Gaming Blogs out there. I am not focused on the numbers like I said, but growing the HalfShelledHero community is something I try to do everyday through my articles and social media. I want to have the opportunity to prove that all my hard work over the years has not been for nothing and that my dream of making it on my own is well and alive.
I hope you enjoyed that little piece of my Origin Story, I am actually considering writing a book about my entire story thus far, the good and bad. What do you guys think? Am I interesting enough to warrant a book?
